At this point, I'm sure you're wondering who I am, so let me introduce myself and share with you why I'm doing this.

My name is Cynthia Barlow and over the past twenty years I have been conducting workshops, seminars and retreats that have inspired thousands of people from all walks of life to make the necessary changes to improve the quality of their lives. With a proven and personalized approach, I've helped define and reshape my clients' lives.

I want to reveal something to you: I wasn’t always an inspirational, successful leader. More than 20 years ago I was married to a CEO, the mother of two sons, living the “picture-perfect life”, but that was the farthest thing from the truth. I had been a Buyer for a major US retail chain, an Operations Manager for a publishing company, and I worked at a consulting firm, but inside I felt like a fraud both personally and professionally. I began to realize I wasn’t happy with my life – or myself.

Back in the 70’s I started taking courses to help me learn some news ways of dealing with life’s stressors. Over the years, with a combination of a slew of experiential programs as well as therapy, years of self-observation, pattern replacement practice and my own self-learning I went to work for one of the leading human empowerment companies.

I had led countless self-development classes and I worked with this firm for 8 years. I became their top program leader and developed the Ontario region for them in the early 90’s. However, the more successful I became, the more I was privy to the inner workings of the people who ran the company. Increasingly I noticed the double standard – they didn't practice what they preached. Though it was a financial sacrifice, I left the company and formed my own, Constellation Learning, in 1997.

And now, here I am, leader of a company that was built from the ground up with passion, persistence and trust in a vision. A vision of a world where every single person can lead a happy, contented, peaceful life with purpose and joy, elegance and grace. A place of authenticity where wearing masks in order to feel acceptable would no longer be needed.

I had watched too many friends, family and co-workers repeat self-destructive patterns and wanted to provide a new kind of foundation that didn’t require a radical removal of all that felt comfortable and known to them.

Since I work so intimately with people in my courses, I am privileged to get to really know them well. Their trust and honesty have helped me to synthesize all my learnings into an approach that helps people learn more about themselves - why they feel what they feel and why they do what they do.

Interestingly, paradoxically, coincidentally (for those of you that have done some learning already you'll know there are no coincidences) about two and a half years ago I was severely affected both physically, intellectually and emotionally by carbon monoxide poisoning in my own home. I tell a portion of the story in this program but I want to share some of it with you now.

For several days, I was under the effects of a slow but deadly carbon monoxide leak from a faulty furnace. I became delusional, sick, incapacitated, before being rescued and taken to hospital. I spent several days recovering in hyper-baric chambers and undergoing other treatments to help flush the toxins out of my body. The prognosis didn't look good. Doctors weren't sure if I'd ever fully recover. The possibility of brain damage was quite real.

BRAIN DAMAGE? I had relied on my wits, my intellect, my analytical abilities my whole life....how would I live? The fact that I was alive was hardly enough to reconcile how I felt. I felt sick, tired, foggy-headed, upset and angry at the entire world.

As the weeks passed and I began my process of healing and recovery, I started noticing that my linguistic abilities, which were always one of my greatest strengths, had diminished significantly. I couldn't speak as fluidly as before. Physically, I couldn't even make it up a flight of stairs. Also, here's the biggest paradox, I was an emotional wreck. My own emotions were out of control. Feelings I hadn't experienced in many years were ever-present. The slightest thing would set me off. Life was not just hard to handle - it was excruciatingly frustrating!

How was I supposed to find the 'pearl' in that situation?

It was now time for me to revisit everything I had learned over the years about emotions, life, spirituality - everything I was teaching for over 20 years. I became my own coach after decades of coaching others and slowly but surely applied the core principles, methods, and teachings to my own situation. I concentrated on reassembling my own emotional wiring so that my feelings would once again learn to 'heel' to my will, not the other way around.

I made the choice to recover. I made the choice to make my life better. I was here for a reason. I had a purpose. I reexamined my priority list and a lot of things have shifted.

Now, instead of thinking what a new client may bring to me, or what a new speaking engagement could do for my business - the focus has shifted. I now, with full love in my heart, think "what can this gig do for them?" and I continually look for ways that I can now serve others better. Freely, joyfully, lovingly.

This series is a result of that endeavor and I hope to touch a lot of lives. The pearls of all my work over the past 20+ years are contained in this cutting-edge e-series that delivers what it promises: positive, long-term, sustained change.

Before I discuss the details of the Mastering Your Emotions audio course and workbook, let me answer a few questions I think you might be asking yourself right now.

What’s so great about being great?

You know you want to be a "brighter" version of yourself - to "turn up" the volume on your potential. Besides, you were born great! We all were. Greatness is everyone's spiritual inheritance. But, we're trained to cover it up, bury it, hide it from the world by those who only wanted to protect us - our parents - our teachers - our friends.

So what is “GREATNESS” really? I'll start with what greatness isn’t.

Greatness isn’t necessarily about your position, your bank account, or the number of people you know. And it certainly isn’t about the car you drive or the clothes you wear. Armani suits mean nothing in the realm of greatness. Neither does a million dollars, though both are nice. Greatness isn’t about what you do or on how large a scale you do it; it’s about who you are and the way people feel in your presence.

Sometimes, great people do things on a big scale: Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Oprah come to mind. But sometimes it’s on a smaller scale. Annie Sullivan, who was Helen Keller’s teacher, helped only one woman break out of her physical imprisonment, one who was able to shed her light on the whole world. Annie Sullivan rose above her own challenges - orphaned and legally blind - and went on to make a great contribution to the world, by helping one other person. Annie Sullivan was a great woman.

Long ago I led a series of classes where the purpose was “to grow into yourself.” I always liked that notion - of becoming completely comfortable in your skin. How many people do you know who are completely comfortable in their own skin? How about you? An awful lot of us play the comparison game and come up woefully short according to our perfectionist grading scale.

Nowadays the term, “he/she’s full of herself” has taken on a derogatory tone. But I ask you, who do you want to be full of - somebody else? No thanks. Even with all my own faults and foibles, I’d rather be full of me than the countless other people I once tried to imitate and fill myself with over the years. The problem with imitation is that eventually, whatever is under the surface will come out.

That’s the thing: you can’t grow into yourself imitating what other people DO. You can only become great by growing into BEING the best YOU possible. And that takes a certain amount of self-awareness and knowledge - and courage.

A great person, though they might end up serving themselves, is not essentially self-serving; his/her intentional actions spring from a desire to help the “whole.” They may end up serving themselves too, but that’s not their primary motivation.

So How Do Emotions Play a Part in Becoming Great?

Your emotions - your feelings - fuel all the choices you make when you’re unaware of why you feel the way you do. And that unawareness, as you may already know, can get you into trouble.

Now, most of us, when we’re feeling happy, contented, at ease, know exactly why we feel good. That’s easy. Just got a raise? Had a baby? Got married? Well of course you can pinpoint why you feel good. And sometimes we know why we feel lousy - lost your job, had words with a friend, ended a relationship - but most times, most people have not a clue why they’re so upset about little things, especially in relationships.

You know the pain of having said something you regret to someone you love. Don’t you wish you could suck the words back in as soon as they escape your lips? But there you go and the damage is done. People may forgive, but they don’t forget. Not really.

Why would I want to master my emotions?
How will that help me enjoy my life more?

Because the truly great have done so. They have shed light on the way to greatness through their lives. All great spiritual leaders have demonstrated emotional self-mastery. That’s why we admire them and hold them in high esteem: they “have their act together.”

The masters have figured out who they are and what’s truly important to them. Their lives reflect choices made from clear self-understanding. That’s why their emotions appear “under control.” It’s not that they don’t have internal emotional responses, it’s that they are able to decipher the meaning behind the emotion, and then choose effective external actions. They know how to “leash” their emotions.

Consider this analogy:

Mastering your emotions is like
training a dog to “Heel”.

Imagine the difference between a dog who walks calmly by your side and one who constantly strains at the end of the leash, dragging you all over the place. You want to go one way but that dog keeps pulling you in another direction, exerting constant tension as he pulls on the leash in front of you. All that tugging takes a lot of energy and it’s not much fun.

Your feelings of resentment and guilt, of frustration and anxiety, of loneliness and depression, to name a few, are the “dogs” in your life. Mastering your emotions—leashing them—is like teaching them to “heel.”

It does not mean you’ll never feel those feelings (the well-trained dog still wants to chase that squirrel, after all!), it simply means you’ll “train” them to not only obey you (instead of you obeying them) but also to lessen over time, until, one day you find you have “grown into yourself” and stepped into the quantum soup of never-ending possibilities.

You will grow into your own greatness
when you forgive yourself for being human.

Let me tell you something: When someone does something and you resent them for it (for example) it’s not about the other person. I so wish it was; believe me, my life would have been easier if it was, but it's always about you because you’re the one feeling the resentment.

The person or situation you resent is simply the squirrel that darted past your dog. And that dog yanked so hard on the leash it pulled you over. Sorry to be the bearer of more distressing news, but the way you feel - those dogs - are only messengers!

Once you know what your negative feelings are trying to communicate, once you “get the message” you won’t be yanked off your feet quite so easily. With time, patience, consistency, and a little guidance, that dog will learn to heel.
